InstaScope / Facebook · A little perspective over time

Your friends list.
Then and now.

Compare the names recorded in two Facebook export snapshots. See what is shared, what appears in only one list, and where names leave room for doubt.

Two formats do not mean two snapshots.

JSON and HTML downloaded for the same export are alternative representations. Use exports from genuinely different historical moments for the same account. Equal name lists can also come from independent exports with no observed label changes; equality does not establish source identity or historical independence.

01Older Facebook export

Older Facebook export JSON or HTML ZIP

Choose a historical export that includes the current-friends list. Upload order and file dates do not establish when Facebook recorded it.

02Newer Facebook export

Newer Facebook export JSON or HTML ZIP

Choose a historical export that includes the current-friends list. Upload order and file dates do not establish when Facebook recorded it.

Source coverage, ordering and import limits

Only the verified current-friends category is compared. Received, rejected and removed requests cannot establish the current list. An absent or unsupported category is rejected; an explicitly empty list is valid. Partial readable lists are admitted with diagnostics, so differences can reflect missing records.

Export dates are optional, user-supplied and unverified. File modification dates, ZIP names, upload times and friendship dates never determine historical order. If both dates are supplied, the older date cannot be later than the newer date. Equal calendar dates are allowed after confirmation because they have no clock precision. Equal or unknown dates require your own evidence of capture order. Reusing a known selected source or saved snapshot is rejected. Separate file picks cannot be authenticated from their names, dates or contents of the friend lists.

Official JSON and HTML ZIPs use the same verified adapters as Friends Explorer. Limits: 2 GB ZIP, 10,000 entries, 20 MB per friend file, 60 MB expanded and 100,000 source rows. Split, encrypted and ZIP64 archives are unsupported. Mixed or repeated friend representations are rejected. Names match exactly after Unicode NFC normalization, preserving case; no fuzzy matching is used.

Facebook Snapshot Vault

Private to this device

Friend display names are sensitive personal data. Save only if you want them to remain in this browser after closing the tab. This Vault stores names, source row numbers and coverage, your label and optional export date. It never saves ZIPs, media or messages.

Saved names and downloaded backups are not encrypted. People with access to this browser or backup can read them. Delete individual snapshots or the entire Facebook Vault below. Clearing a comparison does not delete saved snapshots.

V1 limits: 20 snapshots, 100,000 total records and 4 MB. Saved time is not an export date. Backups restore into this Facebook Vault only. Changes are coordinated between tabs using Web Locks. Browsers without this support can read and export existing data but cannot change it.

What can a Facebook export comparison tell you?

It describes the records in the two lists you supply. The total is a row count, including repeated names. “Only in older export” and “Only in newer export” describe label presence, while “Matching display labels” describes one occurrence on each side. Duplicate-name groups stay separate with their full multiplicities and source rows.

Can this show who unfriended me?

No. Facebook display names are not stable identities. A name can change, several people can share it, and export coverage can differ. Even a unique matching label does not verify the same person. This tool makes no definitive claim about unfriending, blocking, additions or motives.

Where do my snapshots go?

Your ZIP is read in a cancellable local worker. Comparison inputs and results stay in this view’s memory and disappear when you leave or reload. Only Save in the optional Vault persists the minimal validated snapshot in this browser. Restore requires a valid Facebook backup and a content review. No friend names or results are put in URLs, analytics or public metadata.
